For Elementary Students
Flying Treehouse is a Stanford student group that teaches elementary school students creative writing, turns their stories into sketch comedy, and performs them for the children so they can see their imagination come to life on stage. We also also perform the same show for adult audiences because the humor and creativity of children are entertaining for all ages.
We partner with three schools, one per trimester, where we go to teach creative writing to 2nd and 3rd graders. We have a curriculum that is based on the storyspine and includes a dynamic lesson on arguments where students learn how to engage in respectful and creative arguments and counterarguments. During COVID-19, I adapted our curriculum for virtual learning and facilitated the communication with partner schools.
Entertainment: Sketch Comedy
Our process is to read through the children's stories of dragons or alien conflict or friendship and write scripts based on their ideas. We try our best to keep the spirit of the story alive, even if the details significantly change.
As part of this group over four years, I directed, led rehearsals, reviewed scripts, gave and incorporated notes, set the group culture, coordinated with teachers, and managed publicity.
